What is people's first thought or reaction when hearing the words "witch" or "witchcraft"?
Probably something negative like 'satanism' or 'devil worship or that they cast evil spells and eat people’s babies. Everyone probably knows the historical Witchhunts in America and Europe in the Medieval Ages.
Well, that is the past, and it wasn't correct in the perception of 'witches'. Modern day 'witches' are practitioners of 'Wicca' which is actually a type of religion. Most 'witches' today would rather be referred to as 'Wiccan'. Wicca is a nature based religion and they believe in not harming anyone. That is the first 'rule' or commandmant of what is called the Wiccan 'Rede'. Its kinda like the Commandments of Wiccans, and the rules they follow. They have another rule called the Three-Fold Law which is: 'whatever you do comes back to you 3 fold'. That means, if you do something bad (i.e. 'black' magic or an evil spell) you will only get something negative in return, and 3 times worse. Therefore, it is in people's interest to do only good, and they will receive good things in return.
Wiccans do cast spells, but only to do good 'i.e. try and heal a sick friend or spells to improve a certain situation (i.e. lack of money). Many wiccans are asked 'can you do a love spell on me? And make So-and-So fall in love with me?' Most say, yes they could, but that they probably won't because that is tampering with another person without their consent.
I could go on, but rather, to have you find out for yourself about all this, here are a few websites that explain more in depth what Wicca is, and the misconceptions between it and Historical Witchcraft/Witches. It's basically Witchcraft Vs. Wicca. Take a look at the Links pages of these sites for other info.
