LUCY PORTER - Pleasance Cabaret (Friday 4th August)

It's hard to find anything to dislike in Lucy Porter. She's just so sweet, so cute and so bubbly on the stage in front of you and she's trying so hard to be "a good person" - hence the theme of her Edinburgh show this year "The Good Life" - and she likes to dress up cats for tea parties.

Porter's comedy reached epic proportions last year with her fantastic "Happiness" show (one of our 2005 Fringe highlights) and she just doesn't match those dizzy heights this time around with a not so engrossing subject and weaker material. That's the problem of course when you've had such a previous stand out show.

That's not to say she's not good, as she's still head and shoulders above most of her female peers out there, despite her diminutive stature. The material still draws good laughs but at times it feels more like a comedic monologue than a comedic masterclass, as she lets us in just a little bit too much.

Her views on corporate marketing, the perils of 24 hour drinking and the life of a single thirtysomething are delivered with comic aplomb and just who wouldn't want to find out more about her size 3 feet?

A comedian needs to grip their audience from the start and send them away on a high and Lucy Porter certainly does that this year, with a fantastic costume assisted entrance and opening routine and a finale which draws together the previous hour and is a highlight of the whole act.

The laughs bubble along and you leave with a smile on your face and a skip in your step, but we couldn't help but feel there was just something missing this year. Maybe being good cuts out some of the fun.
