ED BYRNE - Pleasance Grand (Wed 2nd August)
Some preview shows are a bit ropey. Some just aren't quite the finished article. But if Ed Byrne can get his show any better than what we saw tonight then words are not invented yet to describe how good that moment would be.
For, on the first night of the 2006 Fringe, it'll already be a struggle to surpass what we saw tonight, as a sold out crowd were wowed from start to finish by the talented Irishman.
Byrne's comedy tells it like it is and it's easy for so many to relate to - that's why he's so enjoyable. If anyone has tried to book a last minute holiday or been on holiday to Northern Africa then you'll see why, as a good example.
Byrne is a known TV face now but he admits to doing some "shit shows" and his stories of some moments that never made it to screen are side splitting.
Religion, kids, paedos at Halloween, Jade Goody and just everyday life in general are all subjects for his caustic wit and, whilst his entrance was class, his closing routine is probably the stand out from a joy to listen to set.
Only tip, try and watch the excellent Michael Douglas film "Falling Down" before you go if you haven't already seen it. You'll find out why!
BDH Rating: 5 / 5
