DAN CLARK - Pleasance Attic (Saturday 5th August)

I have to confess to not knowing who Dan Clark was but what attracted me to this show was the title, "The Day I Lost My I Pod", and part of the fun of the fringe is checking out new people each year.

The theme of Clark's act this year is not just about his I-Pod, although the losing of it on a bus is the catalyst for an examination of our must have gadget culture and the constant technological junkies that we are all becoming. Now I don't even own an I-Pod or any other MP3 player at present, but it's not hard to relate to something in the show.

The laid back style is welcoming and he takes the audience along with him, but although there are some excellent stand out gags, some of the jokes just fall a little short and it doesn't come across as the strongest hour you'll see at the Fringe this year. What does work are gems though, as he begins with letting the audience know what kind of musical burst they remind him of. It's got the potential to be better than it currently is.

A lot of this may also have to do with the venue or rather the fact that the Pleasance oven would be a more apt name, as the heat drains the audience attention away a little and Clark doesn't always have the attention grabbing material to get it back again.

It's an enjoyable foray into his world though and if you're around the Pleasance and at a loose end, one to check out.
