ANDREW MAXWELL - Pleasance Cabaret (Wed 2nd August)
Coming out to Michael Jackson's "Thriller", the former Channel 4 'King of Comedy' was back in Edinburgh for what he rightly described as a "ropey" preview show.
It's always hard to judge just how good a show will turn out from a preview show as they are like a comedian's homework and a work in progress.
What was on display tonight though was enough of a basis for what could develop into another cracking show from the likeable Irishman as the run goes on and the gags are more honed, as you get the feeling that some of the early audiences are struggling to relate.
His show this year regales us with tales of sex, drugs and the Middle East (find out why he now has a big following there!) - sometimes combining all three - as Maxwell takes the audience through his sometimes seedy ups and downs of the last year from the self confessed drugs lover. Bawdry they may be, but humourous as well as you wonder how someone can get themselves in such scrapes and still live to tell the tale!
Even in the moments of lull though, Maxwell's charm and delivery carries him through.
The show is called "Round Twilight" and Maxwell takes you through a journey of how the world is between daylight and night-time. Maybe twilight is about the best time to live life.
Certainly worth checking out later on in the run when he'll be at his full best.
BDH Rating: 3 / 5
